Rivers continually pick up new rocks, deposit old rocks, and weather them until they are smooth, all the while making them smaller and smaller.Įdmonton’s very own North Saskatchewan River! In doing so, bits and pieces of the rocks are chipped away, and the rock undergoes what is known as weathering. As the rocks are eroded away from the mountains, they collide with other rocks, sediments, and even the bottoms of rivers. The process of moving rocks from one place to another is known as erosion. With the changing seasons, water and ice begin to break apart the mountains into jagged pieces of stone that then fall into the raging streams. Pebbles in our Edmonton area usually start their journey all the way back to the Rocky Mountains. These rocks share an awesome history of both the power of water as well as the ancient material in our own province! To learn a bit more about the different rocks all around us we decided to consult our Wild Child rock expert, Magma! With his amazing background in Earth Sciences, Magma is the person to talk to for anything and everything about rocks and minerals. Have you ever walked along the side of a river and noticed the many smooth rocks, pebbles, and stones within it? Have you ever wondered where these came from or how they are made? There are so many to be found in the Edmonton area from the massive North Saskatchewan River to smaller streams like the Mill Creek.
